Solid performance from the Gamecocks against ECU today. The Pirates were tired from playing 3 games in 3 days (today's game being the 3rd one), and playing away from their Greenville home court for a month straight.

USC's superior post size made the difference: the quartet of Wilson, Coates, White, and Imovbioh combined for 43 points and 41 rebounds. Mitchell rose to her best seasons' effort of a team-leading 18 pts: hopefully she's finally recovering her old All-American self since injuring her ankle during the off-season.

A'ja Wilson returned from her doctor-imposed exile from the hardwood with 15 pts and 10 boards, while Coates added 10 pts and 15 rebounds of her own. Jatari White perhaps impressed me the most with the best offensive showing of the season for her - if not of her young college career - with 14 pts. She drove from the perimeter, took 3-ptrs (she made one I thought was a 3-ptr, but apparently her toe was on the line and it was ruled a very long 2-pointer. She attempted another one that went in and out), and just looked more comfortable out there.

Shay Colley hasn't had any eye-popping performances yet as a freshman, but she's been looking more and more comfortable with what Coach Staley and the staff are wanting from her, and is staying on the floor more as a result. She along with Cuevas are adding to the production from Sessions to become a pretty effective rotation at PG: today she led the team with 4 assists.

It was a pretty sizable crowd for the USC-ECU game at 1 pm. I attended the game and thought it was easily 2/3rds USC strong, if not more, and the stands were mostly full in the bottom levels all around. The following game versus UNC-Southern Miss was a stark difference, with mostly empty seats. I remember 2 seasons ago when USC played UNC in this Beach Ball Classic event, and the organizers and game announcers were all very obviously pro-UNC, which pissed me off. But the rest of SC knows who is the more popular program to follow, even if the idiots in MB are clueless...

USC next hosts Elon (7-2) at the CLA this Tuesday....

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina sophomore forward A'ja Wilson was named 2015 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year for her performance at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship in Chekhov, Russia, this summer.

"A'ja's performance this past summer at the FIBA U19 World Championship was impressive," said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO/Executive Director. "She was a team leader statistically and in the huddle, and she played with tremendous leadership and sportsmanship. USA Basketball is proud to recognize her with this honor."

The MVP of the tournament, Wilson scored a USA U19 women's single-game record 30 points against Russia in the championship game and her 18.3 points per game were the second-best all-time in the USA Women's U19 record books. She set a U.S. women's U19 single-game record for field goal attempts (21) and tied the mark for field goals made (11) against Russia, and she became just the fourth USA athlete to participate in and claim two U19 gold medals after also winning gold at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships.

"She had a great summer," said South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley, who was also Wilson's head coach on the USA U19 World Championship team. "She looked like a veteran. That was her third or fourth international competition, so she understood what was needed of her. She scored a lot of points and rebounded the ball very well, and she made her entire team look good."

We'll move up in the next rankings.

DePaul, a team we beat just beat #20 GW.

Iowa St beat #22 Cinn

Just a couple spots, but our RPI and ranking should move up slightly. St John didn't do us any favors though, their RPI was 201 coming into that game.

St. John's isn't good, but we showed nice resolve when they made some runs in the second half to cut the lead to single digits.

Still have some concerns, we turn it over way to carelessly. Team is not nearly the same since Paradise Jam Tourney. Have to find a way to get Chat & Kacinas to play well again.

Also can't defensive rebound to save our life either.

Kacinas has played alright but Chatkevicious has played like complete shite for a while.

Got to cut out the lazy turnovers and get back to where we were rebounding the ball

Our defense looked great except for the last 5 minutes. Cobb shoots Free Throws like Shaq though, our FT shooting overall was bad.

Great to see everyone in a suit get some time yesterday.

This isn't a great team, no, but they are better (quite a bit) than last year's. They should realistically double the SEC wins from a year ago, especially since UF, UGA, and Arky aren't as good.

Gamecocks look to go undefeated for the first time ever in non-conference play.

The Memphis Tigers were having dinner at Liberty last night in the Vista. A couple of tall guys, but overall, we have a lot more size than they do.

They must be staying in the Hampton.

We do not want to overlook these guys. They are talented, they have recruited reasonably well even after the sanctions Calipari left them holding.

Historically they have owned us dating back to the old Metro days when they had Dana Kirk there cheating his arse off.

We need to shake the cobwebs off early and get straight to business.

6PM ESPNU.

Pretty neat article on our short-time of sharing a conference with Memphis some decades back.

LINK

I remember the 2004 loss in the NCAA tournament, but had forgotten that they beat us in the NIT a couple of years before as well.

(still a good read)
