This is long, but this is my guess as to how the past few years went down and how get are stuck in this mess:

2017
Good Ol Boy Network: Look Ross, Lukey boy loves Ole Miss & he's one of us. He should be the Head Coach.

Ross: Fellas, out of all the coaches in Freeze's tenure, the one assistant most fans wanted fired outside of Corey Batoon was Luke. There is no way I can get the fanbase on board with this and that will have a direct impact on my ability to raise money. Dave Doeren is who I want to hire.

Good Ol Boy NW: Look son, you ain't back home in Kansas. We run the show here and you do what we say. We like the access Luke gives us. Hire him.

Ross: F it, I'll give him a 4 year contract with no buyout and when you have to pony up the cash to buy him out, don't blame me.

2018 after a 5-7 season and 1-7 in SEC.

Good Ol Boy NW: Ross, our fan base is pissed off, season tickets are going down, what the hell. Do we need to bring back Colonel Rebel?

Ross: I told you this would happen. We just need to buy him out and go get another coach.

Good Ol Boy NW: Matt is great. He came to each of our homes for dinner multiple times and when we say player x should be playing, he listens. He just needs help. You left him stuck with those terrible coaches from Freeze. You are to blame. Fix it.

Ross: Screw this whole thing, I'll hire 2 former head coaches for the coordinator positions. I'll have to overpay for them to come here and have to guarantee their contracts, but if you want to go all in on your boy, that's on you. I'm out the next job offer I get.

Fast forward to 2020 and Ole Miss is unable to land a quality AD because they are told they will be stuck with a coach that just finished 4-8, but still need to get the fans back and raise money. The AD can't fire Luke because the buyout for Matt Luke & the coordinators is too much and the athletic department has lost money from the decline in ticket sales. Meanwhile Ross Bjork carries his championship belt to a meeting with an oil tycoon looking to donate part of his fortune to A&M.

Yes. I have said this for a while now. However, I believe that it was mostly Ross Bjork either trying to screw us or really being that stupid. I don't think he was as pressured into hiring Luke as this makes out.

Anyone that thinks Ross is a good AD has a screw loose.

Makes you think, what are the chances as soon as the NCAA started its investigation Bjork knew Ole Miss was screwed and began negotiations with A&M on being their new AD? Doing that, he wanted to make sure that A&M had one less secW program that could compete with it. He knew Luke was a bad hire but did it anyway and put it in terms that OM would be in no position to buy him out.

Unlikely but not so far fetched if you ask me.

Well, I'm trying to understand how he was chosen to run a big boy program after not only making terrible decisions but also getting blamed by the NCAA for the department that he ran. Why would he be the best candidate?

Which is why I feel like talks with A&M began as soon as he was informed about the investigation. That way he was able to spin everything to make himself look good while throwing the program under the bus. By the time the sanctions came out I guarantee he already had a deal worked out with A&M because they knew Woodward had been contacted by LSU.
