A huge win for Oats will be getting Watford to stay in state with Bama. If he can secure him, I’ll feel a little better.

Meyer was assistant coach in college for about 5-6 years before he became a head coach for another 5 or so years. Florida hired him with a lot of collegiate level experience. Oats was coaching high school not long ago!

Before Saban was hired Bama football was sitting still in the water!
We just finished expanding BDS, still selling out every game, just getting off probation (no more sanctions), made a BCS bowl less than a decade ago, was willing to pay top dollar for a coach, had 12 national championships to fall back on, and Saban didn't have a show-cause.
Our basketball team has had success in the past, but we are far from being a blue blood. There's not much talent in the state, will have to pull OOS recruits. Basketball is clearly #2 in the eyes of most of our fans. The two coaching searches are nothing alike. We can't pull an Izzo, Williams, K, Self, etc. You can offer, but their current school will match or beat anything you throw at them.
Who are these coaches at big time programs that you are so sure we could pull?

He was a WR coach. Not even an OC/DC.

He was a HC for 4 years before Florida hired him. Just as long as Oats has been a HC in college.

What about Billy Donovan - two years as a HC at Marshall before taking over at Florida. Worked out well for them.
I’d rather have an unproven up and comer than a guy that plateaus at average.

Guys...I just want basketball to be relevant again. If Oats can do that, fantastic! I understand basketball priorities will never match football priorities but other schools are successful in both sports with big name coaches in place. It just seems like every basketball hire is a 50/50 risk...I believe Alabama could/can do a little better than that!

Without getting into the weeds, I think Bill Battle could’ve done a much better job in 2015. He was content to hold onto Grant so when the fans/boosters revolted, he was caught unprepared for a coaching search. His courtship of Marshall was way too public. He never should’ve flown out there unless he knew for sure he was coming back with Marshall on the plane. While Battle was meeting with Marshall, Marshall’s son was basically in the other room tweeting stuff about Wichita State. We basically gave Marshall leverage to get a raise.
When Marshall publically turned us down, Battle didn’t really have a Plan B until a mutual contact put Avery in his lap. Battle was pretty content at that point to wrap things up.
That’s all Monday Morning Quarterbacking, but that whole firing/search was just symptomatic our admin’s approach for so long. “Just enough to get by” seemed to be the mission statement.
Not taking away anything from AU & Pearl because they did what they needed to do to get on this run, but we allowed ourselves to slip to this position. It should be no surprise that AU got to the Final Four before us when you consider the attitude we've had towards basketball.

Do you think Oats will be able to convince Kira Lewis to stay and does he sign Trendon Watford (a HUGE Bama fan)....these 2 are crucial gets.

Every year there will be "crucial gets". I'm not going in all negative if these 2 don't pan out. These both have been Avery's recruits. Perhaps they feel betrayed at the moment.

I understand Watford lost faith in Avery and only opened things back up when AJ got fired. Getting the big man out west was huge. keeping Kira and Petty would be huge for the kind of O Oats runs. We need a lot of high energy guys. AJ used the term buckle up but clearly it was a bogus slogan. Oats teams will be up tempo spread the floor. I see a lot of easy baskets in the paint.
