Looks like we’ve got a coaching search on our hands.

Yep. about time. Gruden is a long shot. Mullen and Mike Gundy are next choices, but I'll be really surprised if either takes the job. Mullen is very well paid and is happy where he is. Very little pressure and the fans/boosters are happy with 8 win seasons.
Gundy will win 9-10 a season, and score 50 points and lose a couple of games a year.
Good luck.

I think Mullen leaving state at what he's getting paid to come coach here, a situation where he is far, far more likely to end up fired, would be a pretty shortsighted decision

My guess? Norvell or Campbell. I like Norvell because he is a solid offensive coach and can develop QBs and WRs. Also, he as been OC and assistant HC at Arizona State and Pitt so he has some Power 5 experience near the HC seat.
Campbell has 2 years HC at Iowa State, but he is 9-13 so far. 6-4 this year. Norvell looks like my choice, but what do I know?

Campbell has a huge buyout iirc.

Norvell may turn out to be a good coach, but he is too inexperienced at this time. I will pass.

Mullen makes about $5M a year and hi contract runs through 2021. He should be the winningest coach at MSU after next year. Looks like a 9-3 season and another good bowl game for the sixth consecutive year. The school and fans are happy with 8 wins a year. He and his family love it there. He's turned down 2 chances to move already.

What about Dino Babers? He's got Syracuse playing very well.

Not saying Babers, Norvell, et al. aren't or won't be good coaches, but it is funny to me seeing the fans of other teams so dismissive of Tennessee actually making a big hire. I mean, i get it, we've hired Dooley and Butch, but the feel is almost that VOLS are such a terrible program that we have no choice but to hire some MAC coach.

Certainly a lot hinges on this hire.

I think UT is a great program. I only ask because Babers has taken Syracuse talent and made them very competitive. Norvell isn't a power 5 coach so i don't think he's a good fit. Gruden has a great name, but has never coached in college (see Lovie Smith). Plus Gruden is a West coast Offense guy. Nebraska tried the former NFL, west coast offense coach when they hired Callahan (Who also made the Super Bowl vs. Gruden and Tampa Bay), didn't go well.

Give Babers UT's talent and he builds a hell of a program.

Nah, I knew what you meant (and fans of other schools that post otb about who will coach UT next) and didn't necessarily take it as a slight. I think UT fans have an inflated sense of worth in the brand much the same that a lot of schools' fans do. But it is interesting where people think UT fits in regarding the national picture.

I am sure Babers will be a good coach somewhere, but Tennessee absolutely has to make a bigger hire than that this go round. There is no excuse not get a bigger, proven name.
