Analysis of our defensive performance v Miss State

B+ easy
Gameplan? B+, if not an A-minus
With 12 minutes left in the game, we had held Miss State to 14 points
Fans should let that sink in before they start whining about the 14 more points they scored in the 4th quarter. The defense that Odom brought got us to that point with 11:45 remaining. Let it sink in. Is that the strategy of someone who should be questioned?
some say we didn't blitz enough, and that's maybe because some people don't understand the concept of hot reads in a Mike Leach offense - if you blitz Leach, his WR's stem their routes on a fly, quickly fill toward the area vacated by the blitz, and Leach QB's eat you alive
that's why we didn't blitz, period
Many times as well, State's QB threaded the needle so finely as to proclaim he was just plain lucky. He's got a great arm, no doubt, but our LB's were very near batting down or intercepting some key passes and at least one TD pass, actually two I think. Miss State was lucky as hell many times, plain as day. Guarantee you all Leach himself is telling them that in film yesterday/Sunday. "You got lucky there." "You got lucky again."
Run game defense? With a 5 man front, a 3-2-6 set, we held them to 69 yards rushing. So why would anyone question our numbers up front?
We made some mistakes I think in the two-deep over what looked to be like confusion. One big throw State got, our safeties were both in the middle of the field when State had twins out wide. It was 2 deep man under, so the twins were covered with an underneath bump/run focus, and the safety was not over the top to compensate.
State played about as perfect as they could play, and we still won. Just like the Auburn game. Auburn played almost mistake free football against us, and it's difficult to win every Saturday when that happens. Harsin is a damn good coach. Leach is a damn good coach. SEC West ain't easy

We won because their field goal kicker couldn't hit shite, they missed 3 attempts

Ya know it’s possible to be super happy we won and are bowl eligible and still point out mistakes we made critique adjustments or lack thereof and admit we got more than a little lucky with states kicking situation

I'm a positive fan who recognizes and defends good coaching. I don't know who Captain Short is. I know Mike Irwin has Jerry Jones' dick in his mouth, so he's certainly not a better fan than I am.

Arkansas defense did not force a punt or turnover from the 12 minute mark of the 2nd qtr on out. Mississippi state’s shortest drive before the last where they attempted a kick as time expired, was 6 plays where they moved the ball 47 yards. They had success against our defense for almost 3 whole quarters and there were still guys open the first two drives Rogers just missed them. I’m not saying this is odoms fault, hell maybe that’s just how bad our talent on defense is right now and we will just have to recruit ourselves out of it but to say the defense played well outside of the 4th qtr is objectively false.

I didn’t blame the players. I said it’s either the players or the coaches one, but either way we did not play great defensively. This isn’t saying our players suck, this isn’t saying our coaches suck, it’s saying that this past Saturday they did not have a great game. And yes statistics tell us a lot. Our offense did a great job moving the ball and so kept state off the field as well as state itself taking long methodical drives that sometimes didn’t end up as points due to their own per execution which is good for us. But I can be happy with the win and happy that our coaches had us more ready than state and still see things that need to be fixed and point out where we fell short at. I think we have a combination of a lack of Depth, still lack of talent in some areas, not that they don’t play hard but heart only gets you so far, and in some small cases, we could be a little less vanilla. For example on 3rd and long instead of rushing both ends outside maybe have an inside outside stunt with the nose and one end or something idk. It’s not much but just something every once in a while to change up the look we give to opposing lines.

So was I, as I never thought he was good, I thought maybe he could get a couple base recruiting classes for the next coach. He did that and nothing more.
I never said I wanted Odom gone, I have said in every game thread this year, I’m tired of the bend don’t break bullshite he runs. Never said he couldn’t coach up a player. His bend don’t break defense keeps our defense on the field long enough they get tired in the 4th quarter and just can’t physical perform.
You keep jerking Odom off because he is good for 48m of a game, maybe when we change it to 12m quarters I will be all in for Odom.
