Bye week stuff..

Was trying to make sense of our (bad) 3rd down numbers and went in a rabbit hole...not sure I came out yet.

We are 17th in 3rd down conversions 47%
60th in total number of 3rd down conversions per game.

But..
122nd in third downs per game 11.9 (we don't get many to convert)

1st in Net Yards Per Play 4.37 (Offense minus Defense)
3rd in Offensive Yards Per Play

1st in Net Points Scored per drive (Offensive minus defense)
4th in Offensive Points per Drive (3.55)
5th in Offensive Field Position start

((All stats minus garbage time))

122nd in total number of punts
33rd in Long Scrimmage Plays
43rd in total first downs
46th Red zone conversions (Pod)
13th Tackles for loss yards given up
4th Sacks allowed

((Includes garbage))

We don't have many third downs because we have good field position and net solid yards on all downs which chews yardage and limits both the number of 3rd and 1st downs while not having many negative plays or sacks.

We appear to just be very efficient on offense. Not explosive per se (although more lately).

Good compilation. I think our primary weakness is that third down conversion percentage.

The Senator wrote a few days ago about how that might change with a different quarterback.

Changing the QB isn't going to help when the Dawgs have struggled on 3rd and short running the ball.

Thanks.

I guess I almost came to the conclusion that isn’t really a weakness as much as it appears.

If you are 122nd in number of third downs, that means you really aren’t getting to third down much. That would be a problem if you weren’t still top 10 in scoring.

We are almost averaging a first down every two plays.

Will have to look more but “feels” like we generally either drive and score or go 3 and out.
