Whatever else Ed Orgeron was, he as a character. Maybe bordering on a caricature, but a character nevertheless. He made the league more colorful, and it'll be a little less interesting in his absence.
LSU always seemed to have buyer's remorse with Orgeron. Seemed like he was what was handy for Joe Aleva after Jimbo pantsed him in the coaching search. Still, it worked out for a while with Orgeron. He was 49-17 at LSU and didn't post a losing record.
Woodward was never an Orgeron believer, I don't think, and Orgeron's off-field behavior was clearly drawing some side eye. I thought that he'd get fired in the off week after Ole Miss, especially if he lost at Ole Miss.
The expectation was that he would lose against Florida, but managed a win. Woodward was clearly worried about Orgeron pulling a rabbit out of his hat, and decided the best strategy was to take away the hat.

I think Woody had a big folder full of "cause" and coach O could cause some uncomfortable conversations with the NCAA and or the Dept of Ed with Title IV issues.
Woody put the folder in front of him and said we do not have to pay you a dime, O said he doesn't have a problem pulling a Lying Leo Lewis state evidence, so they agreed to part ways with his buyout and most of O's embarrassing stories stay in Woodys safe, and Coach O protects LSU.
Not really sure if they needed to throw in the no head coaching jobs in the sec in the next 18 months but it is what it is.

Diminished if you mean the league got “classed up” a bit. When he talked he sounded like he just got done smoking 20 cigars and blew the entire defensive line.
