I am curious why LSU didn't win a national title between the segregated 1950s and Nick Saban.
What you think?
President and AD commitment to winning changed with Mark Emmert and Skip Bertman then they hired Nick Saban. Everything changed then. Before they were pretty much just happy with turning a profit.

There is an excellent reason LSU didn’t win a NC between 58 and 03
1) Paul Dietzel left for his dream job at Army
2) the innovative platoon system platoon system he created became moot due to rule changes in 62/63
3) Bear at Alabama
4) Bo Rein died in a plane crash forcing LSU to hire Stovall off the cuff
5) Arnsparger would have won one. He wanted to get out of coaching and took the AD job at Florida (where he hired Spirrier)
6) Rather than hire Spurrier, we hired 32 year old Mike Archer (Arnsparger’s D coordinated who really didn’t coordinate bc it was Arnspargwr)
7) We went cheap with the Curly and Dinardo hires
When Emmert came along he ended the “cheap” hire mindset. His model was a proven college winner with NFL and coordinator background. He picked Nick. The rest is history.
My caveat is that if dumbass Dinardo had not let Bull Reece leave (personality conflict ) after ‘97, there is a decent chance we win a NC between ‘97 and ‘03 under Dinardo. He could coach. He already owned Auburn at that point and began to pass Alabama. He was also a solid recruiter when winning. Lou Tepper derailed him. Nick shows up in 2000 and wins the SEC in 01 with Dinardo’s guys.

I think the AP sports writers had to much power before the BCS era started. If you go back to the era prior the the BCS (1998) the sports writers voted (AP Polls) on who would be the champions. Most of these guys were on the NE Coast and West Coast, in the big cities. NY, Chicago, LA, maybe Dallas etc.
The largest population of writers in the south were probably in Atlanta. Bottom line, there was no respect for the SEC in this profession except for Bama, and they had to earn every bit of it in the 60 and 70s.
If you go back 50 years prior to the BCS, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, GA, Bama x6 and Florida won the AP Polls from 1948 to 1997. 11 nattys went to the SEC in 50 years.
Since the BCS and Playoffs started it took a lot of the AP power out of the hands of the sports writers. Since 1998 there have been 13 nattys from the SEC in 22 years.
Therefore it was Northern aggression of the press that kept all the SEC down. haha
