I love when people who don't know anything about football try and make disparaging comments.

You send the blocking personnel and back out there to see what the numbers look like. If you get favorable numbers you throw it out to the back and walk in the endzone. If not you shift back under center and run it. It also puts something on film for your future opponents to think about. Which later on down the road could leave them light in the box vs a QB run.

Shifts have meaning in football. They are checks to see what the defense is in, as well as wholesale changes of plays from one shift to the next. It's not just some whirly bird something or another, or whatever the hell you called it.
