I've heard he was upset that we wouldn't join a conference while he was there. Which left the team vulnerable to things like the infamous Ouachita Baptist where they "hired" our starting QB the night before our game against them and got a copy of our playbook to boot.

Regardless, you are right. It was an early brush with success that we couldn't sustain. We had some very good coaches who would do well for a year or two and then head off to what they saw as greener pastures until the mid 50s.

College football in the south wasn't as big of a deal in the north except for a few teams. Pro baseball was still the most popular sport in America during the times of Bezdek.

Other college programs had much better success than Arkansas during those times because the school treated it as a club sport and nothing serious while other coaches stayed at those schools longer as they felt were better jobs.
