It makes sense if you don’t understand the long game. The long game is 4 P5 conferences under 1 TV contract. So numbers are the driving factor. And while Mizzou and UofSC are not historically good teams, when looking for 16 to 20 teams in a balanced conference they do have a role. I am not a fan of Mizzou being in the SEC because culturally they just don’t fit very well but I understand that they are in and have a role to play.

Adding Texas isn’t a huge win for the SEC either really. Yes they have a large TV market value but by moving to the SEC and killing both the big 12 and longhorn network ESPN is now going to get Texas TVs at a steep discount vs lost revenue and duplicate services. And they push Fox a bit down the rating. The SEC ROI for ESPN has moved to cutting cost more so than generating revenue with moving Texas. That’s Texas’s role. And it doesn’t matter if they never make a playoff because ESPN can hype and market it while moving forward with creating a 64 team super conference under 1 TV deal.
