I think 12 is perfect as I like the idea of rewarding the best regular season teams with BYE weeks

Exactly. Every other sport in the world uses the regular season to determine a champ. CFB is the only sport that utilizes sport writers as the determining factor. Yeah, zero bias concerns there.
