It's narcissism.
They're the same type of people who would've been Cowboys fans 10 years ago, or Patriots fans 5 years ago.
They bandwagon a successful program because they think it makes them better than others, and they're loud about it.
ETA: there are no big college teams where I live. Plenty of Alabama fans though.

Huge BAMA fan base nationwide. Plenty of diehard BAMA fans who know nothing about a bandwagon dude. A fanatic is where you find them. Nobody has to flash their credentials at the door to make you happy.
