I don't think the two are really comparable. The vast majority of high schools have at least 2 soccer teams, with some having as many as 6. There's only a handful of places that you can even play ice hockey in Alabama.

However, having a viable pathway to the pros in soccer in the south is a fairly new development for soccer.

Fairly new? A tad over 2 decades ago my brother had a teammate go first round in the MLS draft, at 16.

Wasn't comparing the two. Just saying that it's too hot in the South to play and that we're just catching on to soccer.
