I was laughed at for ordering “sweet” tea at a restaurant in Louisville. Was brought iced tea with sugar packets on the side.

I want to believe you, but I don't. Not in Kentucky anywhere.
And Georgia needs to be kicked out of the south.

I find this suspect.
KY has been the center of Bourbon since America was founded.
Real historic "sweet tea" was actually bourbon in the genteel south where proper souther ladies were not supposed to drink in public. To compensate they would order "sweet tea" which was code for "get me a bourbon".
Even today, a mint julep "correctly made" has sugar and bourbon and n o hint of anything tea related.
