Bama has been a draw from non-southerners for a while now. I know at one time (30s and 40s maybe) they actively recruited the northeast.
The pitch at that time was going after northeastern WASPs who did not want their children going to school with Jewish kids (which were entering the northeastern colleges in high numbers).
The truth is that AU has been one of the most racist schools in the SEC for a while (maybe it has changed in the last 5 or 10 years). Their recruiting pitch to high-end neighborhood students in the Birmingham area was, "don't you want to come to AU where you will have mostly students who look like you?". Sickening.

AU is only racist because the minority students from AL can not get in AU or their scores are such they have a lot of other opportunities at other prestigious Universities. The rest run to Bama or the other smaller schools in the state.
It will be interesting to see the dynamics of the in state student population will be at both AU and UA when AL gets the lottery,
