I knew Woody Hayes had 5. Didn't know about the other guy.

For being such an unknown, it feels like Bernie Bierman should be remembered more. Dude held the record for most title alone for nearly 30 years (won his 5th in 1941, Hayes didn't hit 5 until 1970) and didn't lose the record until Bryant passed him in 1979 (he passed away in 1977, so he never saw his record broken).
Considering that, unlike Alabama and Ohio State, no one has even come close to what Bernie did at Minnesota, it adds to that accomplishment.

The issue is that a couple of Bierman's titles came before the poll era, so he's not always credited with the same number depending on who's doing the counting.

No, I would have lost that bet.
As a side note, it's interesting that they consider coaches on that list from the late 1800s and early 1900s, decades before the proliferation of modern rules, teams, conferences, or even ranking systems.
For example, Walter Camp has three before 1892, when there were no forward passes, the field was 120 yards long, and there were no specifics for what size the ball should be (it was bigger).

Bryant is an odd one in that during the modern era he had one National Title that probably would have gone to Arkansas... but he had a couple of others that he lost out on he should have won because of the strong media bias against Southern teams.
