I think one other thing to bear in mind with Shug is that both he and Bear coached before, during and after a massive transformation in the late 60s & early 70s as the SEC slowly integrated.

Bear struggled as well in '69 and '70. Got whooped by USC in the season opener. Lost to both LSU and Auburn those two years. But obviously he rebounded big time in the 70s and Bama was without a doubt rolling in the post integration era.

Shug stumbled in '73 and '75 but otherwise had an impressive set of seasons late in his career during a period of massive change. The longetivity and wins piled up over multiple decades are why Shug is worthy of a stadium named after him.

And beating Bear 3 out of 4 seasons (69, 70 & 72) is no small feat.

Let's not forget that he beat USC on the road in '71.Didnt take em long to recover.

I also think the "impact" of that game has been slightly exaggerated through the years.

Integration was beginning to happen anyway and I don't think it "pushed" it any faster.

In 25 years Shug won 1 SEC title. Hard to believe he has a stadium named after him with only 1 SEC title.
