SEC basketball programs ranked by all time AP poll rankings
quote:

Yep - it's wild
LSU has been to 10 Sweet 16s. Alabama has been to 7 Sweet 16s.
LSU has been to 6 Elite 8s. Alabama has been to 1 Elite 8.

LSU has been to 4 Final 4s. Alabama has been to 0 Final 4s.

We just shite out pants in the Sweet 16. It's what we do. Tennessee too, to a certain extent.
Well maybe this is the year.

TRUE, Plus......
In addition to more 16s, 8s and FFs....
We also have been to more Tourneys and won more SEC Titles than the Skoal Drool Things. Plus we have THREE NBA HOFers and more NBA picks.

LSU is modestly ahead of Alabama historically when it comes to SEC and regular season success but y'all definitely pull way ahead when it comes to NCAA tournament success. There's no question LSU has had WAY WAY more success once in the NCAA tournament than Alabama (or Tennessee and Missouri for that matter). That's why I have LSU as the #4 all time SEC program slightly behind Florida which would be a good bit behind LSU if not for their amazing run of national championships and Final 4s in the mid 2000s.

As for Tennessee and Missouri, yes they've been significantly better than Alabama since 2000 but this is a discussion of programs all time. Alabama has more all time wins and a higher all time winning % than both Tennessee and Missouri.

Alabama and Tennessee have almost identical SEC regular season championship and NCAA tournament numbers with Tennessee having 1 more regular season title and 1 more NCAA tournament appearance. Both schools have been to the same number of Sweet 16s and Elite 8s. Alabama has 2 more SEC tournament championships than Tennessee. Alabama leads the head to head series 60-47. In fact, Kentucky and Alabama are the only two current or former SEC members that Tennessee doesn't lead the all time series against. Alabama and Tennessee are practically dead even as programs all time.

The difference however between the 3 programs comes with Missouri who has a significant lead over both Alabama and Tennessee in conference championships, NCAA appearances, Sweet 16s, and Elite 8s. In fact, Missouri has been to more Elite 8s without a Final 4 appearance than any program in the country.

In retrospect, I'd rank these programs this way among SEC programs:

5) Missouri (just slightly behind LSU)
6a) Alabama
6b) Tennessee
