I always thought it was funny how people are just fans of a team with no ties to the state or actual school. Like how do you all of a sudden wake up in Indiana and decide you’re an Oregon fan? I won’t even take these people seriously or have a real conversation with them if they don’t meet the above criteria.
I get what you're saying, but there are professional teams around the world that have millions of fans, none of whom have any association with the organization.
College sports are obviously different, but there are plenty of tie-ins with family members and friends, or even vague associations. For example, I know a lot of people in Los Angeles who pull for Alabama solely because they're USC fans and equate the two programs from a historical aspect.
Some kids just find a player, a story, or a style that they like, and become somehow bonded with that team. It really doesn't make them any less of a fan.

Your friends are frickin idiots. That’s like a Lakers fan pulling for the Celtics because they both have a lot of titles.

That’s the difference in college and pro. It’s almost acceptable for pros but it’s still stupid to me. You root for the team that you or your family grew up in and has ties to. For example if you’re from Kansas, you have no business being a fan of the patriots.
