How is stating there were injuries an excuse? Seems like saying the playoff should be expanded because of it is an excuse more so than saying a team was unlucky because of it.

When it is your team, you are making an excuse, when the playoff selection committee points it out, it is information to help decide if a team is worthy. In other words it's self-serving when you say it.
