I'll take keeping the regular season highly meaningful every year over making it so stupidly big the entire regular season is nothing but a seeding contest.
How is the regular season meaningful if someone can drop a game and get when an undefeated team that doesn't?

The regular season matters, but what people are leaving out is that the last 5 regular seasons matter for this season. That's the problem.
If Bama came into this year having finished 3-9 the last 5 years, they wouldn't be a lock to the CFP if they lost to Florida.

Because not all conferences are created equal. It's not that hard.

How can a national trophy be meaningful when you don’t actually have to play in a P5 conference to win it, don’t need to win your division(much less your conference) to win it, can lose a couple games and win it, etc..
The P5 just need to break away from the NCAA and crown a champ inside those. 4 16 team conferences with a governing body setting schedules and rules.
Conference winners to playoff
Division winners to conference title game
Pod winners play for division title
Pods play other 7 teams in their division plus new governor if body schedule
NCAA can crown a D1 champ for non P5 teams (coastal, Cincy etc)
P5 conference crowns it’s champ. De facto 16 game playoffs.
