Thank God he made it...heads of Auburn fans everywhere would have exploded if he had made it from 5 yards closer because Kevin Porter was offsides. In the video, you can see the official throw the flag, which just gets picked up and never even acknowledged by the white hat. 2:03.43 mark.

Interesting little factoid...on Alabama's other legendary kick, Philip Doyle's 48 yarder to beat Tennessee on the last play in 1990, the ref threw a flag for roughing the kicker, which was also just picked up.

This is true. It is also true that with modern replay, that play never happens because Greg Richardson was down in the field of play.

There were some amazing, thrilling, heart-breaking, historical football games in that 1981-1989 stretch of the Iron Bowl.

I didn't realize Auburn had Bama bottled up for much of that last drive. Sacked Shula, had us 4th & 4. Bama runs a reverse, Shula throws a pancake block, we pick up the first down, and the rest is history. Pretty cool.
