So of these 49 players...

3 majorly exceeded expectations
3 exceeded expectations
17 met expectations
10 slightly failed
16 majorly failed

I know it’s hard to keep that many highly ranked players on the team, but I find it troubling how many busts/transfers we have.

Are Mays and Ford major fails due to transfers?

Edit: I would say that Rice majorly exceeded.

Matt Landers loses us games. He would be a failure as half a star.

Zeus has been really good since he took the reigns, jury still out on Adam Anderson. He has played well this year and could be a force for us next year, and regardless of the opinion from some of the board I don’t think you can list Cook as failing even using your metrics.

He’s been good, not 5* good.

He’s been good this year at times, but overall he has not played at a high 4* level.

He was the #700 recruit or something. The fact that he even sees any playing time is impressive, despite his performance.

I'm in board with it.

But the 2018 class is only halfway through their junior seasons. You may want to regrade several of them after seasons end.

You can argue a few one or the other but that's a good list.

Saban built name in an Era of o resigning and processing the dead weight. Imagine clearing those players out to make room for more year after year...

I wouldn’t say Mays was a major failure since he played a lot as a freshman and started several games as a sophomore.

To me, a 5* that transfers after 2 years is a failure, especially in Mays’ case because he played pretty bad at times.

That's the key here.
We arent grading the quality of the recruiting or the quality of the rankings.

It is the quality of the contributions at UGA. Underclassmen who play but make underclassmen mistakes without giving us the full benefit of a 3rd year (or 4th year) actually hurts the team.
It was no different when Grantham played all of those freshmen and sophomores for us that transferred out. We never got to receive the benefits of experience as they cut their teeth and made their mistakes in key games for the bulldawgs.

There is no jury on Adam Anderson. When Jermaine Johnson was hurt, Anderson got more pt and went on a terror. I don't care if he is 225lbs. When he get more pt he's the best player on the team.

New rules don't let you do that anymore, with a 25 signing cap.

The portal is awful. Allows players to quit way too easily.

I did not realize that 3 five star commits from 2018 played at least a year and decided UGA wasn’t for them? I mean WTF we have a lot to offer these kids ... with those three players on our roster, we look like a whole different team.

It doesn't take a lot of reckoning to realize we are recruiting as good or better than anyone in the nation on paper and the results are not panning out.

Kirby built a mirror image of Alabama and it worked well with UF being a disaster. The game changed, Alabama changed, UF is competitive again and we have a midget walk on QB because as good as we are at recruiting keeping recruits and coaching them up is really the thing that matters, not getting them to sign a LOI.

Our WRs have been at best serviceable. Our QBs less than that. Our current crop of RBs is underwhelming and our OL is also. Our defense is stellar when they are up against a team with inferior athletes but when the other side is close to their athleticism they get run out of the stadium. Finally our coaching staff gets out coached consistently. This is not something that has only occurred this season. 2016 gets a pass as the first year. 2017 was as good as it gets. 2018, 2019 and now 2020 shows a slow decline from 2017 and it looks like next year will be a rebuilding year with a new QB at best. Unless of course Stetson Bennett is the man next year also.

Smart has earned some capital with 2017 and it will pay the freight for at least 5 more years. Its hard to imagine us getting worse offensively going forward but it isn't difficult to see us continuing to get run out of the stadium against good offenses and us trotting out a gang of 5 star recruits who look great against inferior opponents and at times against equal or better opponents only to make enough mistakes to get ran in meaningful games.

There has been a fundamental shift in CFB and the only position on the field that matters is QB. Defense is now a thing of memory. Just throw the ball accurately down the field and either complete a big gainer or get PI call....but the ball has to be close to a receiver and a receiver has to give the appearance of getting open....they can't be draped by a DB the entire route.

And then of course when they are open and there is no interference and the QB manages to actually throw the ball where it is catchable they actually have to catch the ball. We don't do that either.

Mark Richt was a good recruiter also. He also failed to get those recruits to play up to expectations. Great coaches do not. Smart has potential but he is not getting any better. He has 5 years, in my opinion, because that's the way UGA rolls....but he will be an outlier if he improves on 2017 after year 5.

You are a broken record. Kirby knows the game has changed as evidenced by Monken and Newman. We likely beat UF with him at QB. He hits those open TD passes our backups miss.

Little early for some of those 2018 guys but I agree it is a bit troubling.

Man that 2017 class was extremely top heavy

Cade was a borderline success since he went to UT and was a revolving door for our defensive lineman when they came to Athens.
