Which also means that 11 players on our vaunted "elite" defense couldn't handle 3 guys, so maybe our offense wasn't entirely the problem.

That assumes that those top 3-4 players can carry the team to win after win. They have to be in the right positions to do it. Bama happens to have an incredible set of receivers, so they'll score on just about anybody.

Except that just about everyone was hailing Zeus and Cook as the guys who we'd ride to a national title up until the first game of this season. So fan expectation wildly missed the mark, as is pretty common.
