For a defense
- allowing less than 50% of needed yardage on first down
- allowing less than 70% of needed yardage on 2nd down
- allowing less than 100% of yardage on 3rd and 4th down
So, examples
- Giving up 4 yards on 1st and 10 = success. Giving up 7 yards = failure
- Giving up 3 yards on 2nd and 7 = success. Giving up 6 yards = failure
- 3rd and 4th are more obvious - a stop is success, a conversion is failure
