Couldn't do that because the whistle killed the play. This happens all the time where a whistle kills a potential fumble/recovery.

The only option that they had was to rule it a fumble with no clear or immediate recovery. Auburn's ball at the spot of the fumble and clock starts on their whistle. Auburn would have then had an attempt at a FG with time most likely completely running out in the game.

I guess you don't understand that fumble recoveries are often credited after a whistle because of the immediate recovery.
