Leach was the OC at Kentucky. The East was the dominant division in SEC football. His QB Tim Couch was the SEC Player of the year and a Heisman Finalist
And those Kentucky teams Leach coached went 5-6 and 7-5 with a Heisman Trophy finalist Welcome to the Air Raid!

I think it's possible Shrader is a good QB and still only the third best QB on campus for State. The Rogers hype is a real thing, Leach wanted him at WSU and then ended up with him anyway at State. He feels like someone in the future that can be your stereotypical Leach QB that isn't a big name nationally but throws for a ton of yards.
I like Shrader a lot and it's definitely possible he ends up being the starter long term for Leach. But it's way less of a forgone conclusion than you would've thought after last season. It's possible he is a better fit in a different kind of offense, but maybe he can make it work in the Air Raid, time will tell.

I mean I haven't seen any State fan suggest that Leach is going to elevate the program to be a perennial contender. If he does the Dan Mullen thing of winning 6 to 8 games a year (in normal seasons) and not being miserable to watch like Moorhead was then most people will be fine with him. Maybe once or twice he rises up and has a 9 or 10 win team, but I expect he has similar results to what he did at Tech and WSU which are perfectly acceptable at State.

That 7-5 record was pretty damn good for KY. The 5 losses were to the #1 TN natty team 13-0, #5 FL 10-2, #14 GA 9-3, #16 Ark 9-3, #17 Penn State 9-3. Schedules don't get much tougher than that and KY had been to 1 Bowl game in the last 15 years prior to that season.
Has any other QB been SEC Player of the year and a Heisman Finalist on a 7-5 team
