2010 wasn't a weak year at all. MSU finished 5th in the SEC-W and still beat the crap out of Michigan (52-14). Alabama finished 4th and beat the crap out of #7 Michigan State (49-7). Auburn won the national championship and Florida beat Penn State.

Also, 1998 was fairly normal for the 90s, imo. Tennessee was one of the best teams in the nation back then, so it's not like they just lucked into a national championship.
