And had you lived in the 18th Century and early 19th Century you would not have made the same mistakes because you would have been so much more enlightened than virtually everyone alive at the time? Even those who were more “progressive” at the time would be regarded as immoral racists by today’s society.
Judging the people of the past by today’s standards is a foolish and prideful endeavor. We somehow assume that we would have been morally superior had we lived in those times. But our concepts of equality and freedom today are directly connected to those leaders of the past who were, like all human beings, neither perfect nor omniscient. There is no need to dishonor them because they were flawed people, as we are ourselves. But there is great reason to be grateful for the vision they had and laying the foundations that allowed us to have the freedoms we enjoy today. Honor them for what they got right, and learn from what they got wrong.
