tarting with Fort Sumter is a very misleading place to start because it ignores the causes of secession.

If that is truly your starting point then you have to say the civil war was caused by the north not abandoning their fort in the confederacy.
Fort Sumter was owned by the federal government. Fort Sumter was not owned by South Carolina or any entity of South Carolina.

The federal government has less of a claim to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay now than the federal government had to Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. The former is leased by the feds; the latter was owned the feds. What do think would happen if the Cubans tried to evict us or started shelling our rented Gitmo property?

If you study American history from the beginning then I don’t see how one can come to any conclusion other than states have the right to secede. It shouldn’t matter if it is for a moral reason or not. They have the right to secede. Read up on Lysander spooner. He was a northerner and an abolitionist long before it was fashionable. Despite this he still supported the south’s right to secede. The reality is I can’t see how slavery would have lasted much longer. There’s no telling what the American south would be like today if they had won. Maybe better, maybe worse.
