There are other issues inside the Redcoats stemming from this protesting issue. My middle kid is currently in the trumpet section and apparently there are a couple of members (not sure which section they're in) raising hell demanding the director put out a statement and pushing a narrative that the band doesn't have enough black members.

However, Tara's Theme is a long tradition that is being ruined because it was a theme song to a friggin movie. No one gave 2 shits about it being played.

No. The lone trumpet player is next.

I sincerely hope something was lost in translation because this rustles my jimmies something fierce.
Being in the RCB is a privilege, not a right. You must audition to be a member. We turn away some 200-300 prospective members a year because people WANT to be a part of the organization and we simply have better available. There is a standard to set and there is a reason why the RCB sounds and looks as good as it does.
I would be surprised if the % of black members does not roughly track the demographics of the university as a whole. To say there are "not enough" black members has sickening implications. Are the directors who perform the auditions racist? I know them personally and very well - there is not a chance this could be true. Is the organization racist? It's the (I believe) largest student organization on campus with over 400 members. There were not an overwhelming amount of black members, but we treated them as our brothers because that's how the RCB operates.
Is someone pushing for Kirby Smart to issue a statement that we don't have enough white players on the football team? No? Because it's a performance based organization that takes the best available and they happen to be overwhelmingly black?
Thanks. I hate it.

Your response is effectively the exact conversation I had with my kid. My Redcoat feels the same way as well.
