What exactly is him sitting out going to accomplish? You want to help your community? Be a positive example of someone who made it through hard work and go get your bag

Has this kid not worked hard to potentially "go get [his] bag"? Last I checked he has been starting for Texas the past season and a half and I haven't heard many negative comments about his work ethic. I think the point he's trying to make is the fact that he thinks this issue is bigger than football and wants to set an example for those younger than him that could be fighting the same cultural or societal issues.

You may think this accomplishes nothing, and in the great grand scheme of things, no - this alone wouldn't accomplish much. It's more than just him, though, and he realizes that, and therefore he sees it fit to peacefully protest. Thus far, the comments from his teammates seem to be supportive, and I think his coaches would support the same, so I don't see why myself as a lifelong fan can't also support and see that there is some good intention behind this. The Constitution protects the right to peaceful protest, so I 100% respect his decision to do such.
