It's on a lesser scale but this reminds me of a time I saw a dumb bastard lose a 17 dollar an hour job over an 80 cent piece of breakfast steak, and this was back in the mid 1980's and 17 bucks an hour at that time was pretty good.

The plant this happened at had a cafeteria and the dumb fool tried to hide the steak under some grits. The lady at the counter tried to give him an out, she told him she knew there was a steak in the grits, he denied it, she told the plant manager and he was fired.

I know it's not armed robbery but that was an incredibly stupid thing to do.

It's unclear to me how you can consider your story comparable to OP.

beyond the "the guy lost his job" angle, being a filch in a cafeteria cannot possibly compare to threatening the lives of others with firearms and demanding they be stripped of valuables.

Now if your guy had threatened to gouge out the cashier's eye with a spork I could let it slide.
