It baffles me how many idiots don't understand the basic logistics of a viral outbreak. You seriously think understaffed hospitals can handle everyone getting sick at the same time, regardless of severity?

This. As mentioned, the flu is endemic. We generally know how many people will get sick each year, and how to handle it. We have the beds for it. There is some basic immunity in the population.
Now, along comes a new pathogen. We know nothing about it. If it were to spread exponentially, we cannot handle the volume. Will stress the hell out of the healthcare system. Healthcare staff will have zero immunity and will also get sick further depleting the system.
As I heard on a podcast...I wonder if news came out that 35,000 people were going to be infected and die from Ebola how different their tune would be.
Someone pointed out that the mortality rate would be less than 1%. If true, it’s still magnitudes greater than the flu. Also, we have 2.8 beds for every 1 million people.
I pray all this goes away like the Orange man says, but I’m not counting on it.
