This isn’t realistic for most Americans,

Sure it is. I checked and my wife and I have 10 months in our savings account. It's a matter of discipline. People can do it, but most people do not have the will to do it. At our peak my wife and I made about $120,000.00 a year. We were not and are not rich. While doing that we gave between 10-15% to our church, and helped people in need from time to time.

It just a matter of living within and even below your means until you get bills paid off. The problem is most people live beyond their means and borrow money and use credit cards too much.

I don't agree with everything Dave Ramsey says, but I do agree with about 95%.

nor is it acceptable to have to burn through this savings due to a government-mandated shutdown.
We are not having to, but for some who do have to....what is the alternative?

Ramsey has a saying. "Live like nobody else, so you can live like nobody else."

I suspect you are young enough that if you read his books and took his advice you could easily retire early and have a huge nest egg so you can do all the things you've dreamed of.

The key: Be disciplined.

BTW....I retired when I was 55. Now we can travel and pretty much buy what we want when we want. I work when I want and if I want. We pay cash for our cars, and have given our last two cars away to people who needed them. (Note: We save the money that is in our budget until we can pay cash for them, and we drive the cars for 10 or so years)
