So when someone goes from head coach of a team to an assistant or coordinator they don’t take a pay cut? It happens all the time! He is going from the “head coach” of a department at one of the largest football schools to a position coach which he has not done before. A pay cut is expected!

Yes you’re right, that does happen all the time. Except those people are what we call “fired.” Cochran was not fired. Find an example of a head coach leaving by his own volition to take a coordinator job somewhere else.

You are wrong.
Cochran is taking a promotion.
However, he is going from the best in the country at something with a lower ceiling to a new position with not much verified public experience. That's the reason for the slight paycut. If he does well, he will get a bump next year (probably higher than what he made last season) and those bumps won't stop until he maxes out (S&C reference) his on field coaching abilities.
