It absolutely is not necessary for eliminating genetic diseases and defects. It’s necessary only for extending the lives of people who are born with genetic diseases and defects.

Merely monitoring fetuses in the womb and then aborting those with debilitating diseases and defects is far more effective and far less costly than trying to extend their lives after birth so they can procreate as adults and pass them on to the next generation.
