The "Auburn is a 8-4 team with occasional championship year" is a double-edged sword for Gus apologists because it implies just about anyone can accomplish that here and Gus isn't special.
I'm not the idiot who signed off on a ridiculous contract two years ago. That alone makes him 'special', at least when it comes to replacing him.

Look at TAMU. They decided "not to settle for mediocrity" and paid a huge buyout to Sumlin, then went out an hired a "proven championship HC" in Fisher, but they had to offer a Sabanesque 100% guaranteed deal to get him (despite the assumption that he and FSU were bound to part ways regardless). Where are they now? Does anyone think they will seriously compete for the SEC Championship in the next 3 years?

Sure, we believe we have a better track record as a program than the Aggs, but how much better? What are our options if we decide to cut Gustav loose and pay him the $26.7 million at the end of this season?

More importantly, what do you think our PTB would do in that situation?

ETA: Personally, I think the most prudent plan going forward is to encourage Grimes to retire (he's 65 already) and spend a couple of million to hire the best OL coach in the country we can find, since that appears to be the biggest thing holding our offense back.

We lost a road game in conference.

It happens.

We executed poorly. It happens.

I’m not ready to give up the season.

We’ve got some issues. Belichek and Brady would not be who they are without a great offensive line.

Also a fair point. 0/4 probably wont get him fired (unless we just really embarrass ourselves) because of that buyout, but it does probably put him in a spot where he has to go 2/3 (3/3?) next year or get fired.

Good post. Throwing money at it can only guarantee so much.
