I can be on both sides of the fence on this one. I think it is tricky to allow them to get compensated for their likeness and the jersey example is perfect one. Also, this idea benefits the schools with the biggest booster pockets. They'll know how to play the game.
But I think Tebow's passionate response on this issue is dead on. The kids go into these schools with the understanding it's about the University/College. They know what they are signing up for. Call it a glorified internship because most of the athletes on that stage are vying for a bigger opportunity...the NFL, MLB, etc. But there's also the chance, as with an internship, you don't make the cut. And you live with it and find your next opportunity. I agree with Tebow, it's why I love college sports more than the pro's...because of the passion behind it and the chaos that occurs because a lesser team that plays like a 'team' can beat the odds. The pros is almost a formality...
I'm an ex-collegiate baseball player... and would I have loved to get some compensation for my time since I didn't make it to the league? Sure. But I also got free tuition, experiences, travel, gear, relationships, connections, etc. etc. Yeah, the thought you get hurt in the CFB and lose millions of dollars on a possible NFL contract is nauseating...but you could also go to college and work for most of the rest of your life paying off that same debt if your ride wasn't paid for.
Let's keep the passion, the drama, the hunger and the amateur status for college...there will always be another way to make a dollar.

If the school is taking such advantage of these national treasures, how about we take them out of the equation and let the NFL create a minor league football program? Take the school/NCAA out of it all together.
I am sure tons of people would pay those same millions to try that...it would be like the XFL. Oh.....
I think the athletes need the schools and the institution and traditions they have created more than the schools need the flavor of the month in high school recruits who most do nothing to increase the academic pedigree of the university.
