No one was trying to "keep up with Notre Dame". ND had a very good decade in the 40's due to being able to bring in ex-military players. Not playing in bowls helped them to be able to play relatively weak schedules and then win.

All of Alabama's national title years ended in a bowl, every single one.

You might not want to try to compare your background information on college football to mine, you will lose every time.
