It is like the old rule of thumb in pro wrestling for gimmicks. The very best ones were when a wrestler dialed up some facet of his personality to 11. Often obnoxiously so.
The Stephen A. Smith we see on ESPN is a gimmick. Smith happens to be a bit of a braying jackass in real life. He turns that facet of his personality way, way up on camera.
Like DSJ said, they pay him well to do that act.
