Golding feasted against shitty teams which pumped up the numbers. Steele’s defenses are more consistent regardless of the competition

In addition Golding had a much more talented team

FBS teams with winning records:
2022 unit in 7 games gave up 397 ypg and 25.6 ppg
2023 so far in 8 games has given up 348 ypg and 20 ppg

DE: Eboigbe (2023) *inj 2022
DT: Keenan (2023) close with Young
DT: Oatis (push)
Jack: Anderson (2022)
OLB: Turner (push)
ILB: Lawson (push)
ILB: Campbell/Marshall (2023) close with Henry T
CB: Koolaid (push)
CB: Arnold (2023)
FS: Branch (2022)
SS: Downs (2023)
Star: Moore (push)

Outside of Branch and Anderson I’m not sure where we were more talented last year defensively.

Id also argue most of the positions I have listed as a push I think were improved due to an extra year of experience for guys like Oatis and Lawson and injuries for Moore in 2022.

More importantly I think we have significantly more depth this year at DL (Smith/Payne/Latham) which to me is similar to looking at the QB position because if you have a great DL it improves all the other position groups on the field with them.
