Rob Pate stated he heard the kid fell asleep at the wheel. Had spent a day at the lake and was heading home.

That seems like the most plausible explanation at this point.

That’s what I’ve told too. Kid just fell asleep and drifted into their lane.

As tragic as this is that’s why people need to pump the brakes on berating this kid. He is a 16 yr old who will live with this mistake the rest of his life. His plight is not much easier than the unfortunate children they left behind. I’m just saying compassion should be considered when anyone of us could do the same thing.
