I want to say something to every African American that attends a white church; leave, now.

A Birmingham, Alabama pastor is stirring up controversy for telling African-Americans to stay away from white churches.
New Era Baptist Church Pastor Michael Jordan erected a two-sided sign outside his church that reads, "BLACK FOLKS NEED TO STAY OUT OF WHITE CHURCHES, WHITE FOLKS REFUSED TO BE OUR NEIGHBORS."
quote:
"Whites left the inner city. Whites carried their churches with them. They moved to the suburbs. White people have proved they don't want to move next door to us, or be our neighbors, or worship with us," Jordan told producer Zanda Morrow in an interview.
quote:
"Now they want to plant their white church in a black neighborhood under the umbrella of supposedly to fight crime. The real reason the church of the Highlands want to put a white church in a black neighborhood is they have too many black folks at their main campus and they want them to leave and come to a church in the inner city," he added.
quote:
Jordan says God told him to put up the sign after he found out Church of the Highlands, Alabama's largest church, wants to plant a worship center in the inner city. He believes the move is hypocritical.

That's really sad. There's absolutely no way that man can justify his statement...it's the antithesis of the Christian theology.

That's a big no.

Watch the video if you have the time. The interview is pretty good.
His argument was basically....
- Wypeepo go to white churches
- Wypeepo elected Trump
- Trump wants to build a wall
- Walls are racist because they separate people
- Therefore white churches are racist
- Therefore black people should leave white churches
...it's quite compelling.

Honestly didn't realize it was a year old, just saw it on twitter today: LINK. My bad. What happened with the big white church they were planning on building? Did that happen?

They built it, the people love it, and it's been very successful and done some good stuff in the surrounding community.
But it's just another satellite branch of the megachurch Church of the Highlands, who anybody from here in Alabama will know about. I personally can't stand them because those types of churches seem disingenuous to me. But Church of the Highlands in particular comes across as almost cultish to me, and their pastor Chris Hodges is a pandering Joel Olsteen type. It's been a few years now since I've been to any church but when I was still making an effort to go I had settled into a small community church, they've been around almost 10 years but still meet in a local business free of rent from the owner bc nearly all the money that bring in goes back out to the community. The pastor still worked his day job as a civil engineer bc he took no salary from the church, unlike a lot of megachurch pastors who live in million dollar homes, drive luxury cars, and make giant salaries from their churches. I loved That pastor, he would always be available to set up a day to meet for lunch and talk 1-on-1 with any member that wanted to. It felt to me like what church and fellowship is supposed to be.
Whereas I tried CotH several times over the years, going back to when they were first starting out meeting in the auditorium at Mountain Brook HS, and i always got a weird, disingenuous vibe from them. The goal with them from the beginning IMO was always to build a megachurch empire, and that rubs me the wrong way when it comes to churches. Sure they do plenty of good, but when you see the members bump into each in public they almost act like it's some sort of weird status symbol to be a member there, almost like they're competing to see who can be most involved in the trendy social club.

Ah it's one of those deals, yea I'm not a fan of those kind of churches either. Just a charismatic guy with a nice smile and his hand out.

Exactly. I mean, Hodges isn't nearly on the same level as Joel Osteen or Creflo Dollar (at least I don't think he is), but he still rubs me the wrong way (no preacher pun intended.) Hodges seems to be most concerned with his image and building his status as a "great" preacher, he wants to be a Billy Graham type. Whereas Osteen and Creflo and their specific ilk seem to worship the almighty dollar above all us

That's probably true.
