It’s crazy how hard Nebraska has fallen.

Any ideas on the reason for this?

they were still dominant/elite in the 90s. When Osborne retired they were obviously going to take a hit, although solich kept them respectable and still ran the option. When he was let go they had a string of like 5 HCs that were all mostly garbage and they stopped running the option.

They've never been the same since they got prison raped by Colorado in 2001. A few years after that, they made a decision to try and modernize their offense by hiring Bill Callahan and it was a complete disaster.

They joined a real conference.

For example:

Arkansas was 13th in wins in the 27 years before they joined the SEC, with 6 conference championships.

In the 27 years since they joined the SEC, Arkansas is 50th in wins, with 0 conference championships.

Nebraska falling off has more to do with demographics than it does anything else.

1. Small state with slow growth
*Since 1970 its 39th in total growth
*It has zero metropolitan areas with at least 1 million people
*It's second largest city behind Omaha only has 330,000 in the metro area (Lincoln)

2. Very few African Americans
*The state has less than 5% African American population
*Very few African Americans to recruit and its difficult to convince African Americans from far away to come all the way there.

3. Middle of Nowhere location
*There is only one major metro of 1 million+ within 400 miles of campus (Kansas City)
*Compare that to say Nashville, TN who is itself a major metro and is within 400 miles of 9 other major metros with 1 million + residents

You just have to go way too far to recruit decent talent. There's just simply not enough around.
