Just cost Purdue a trip to the Final 4. Thought it was interesting because of how everyone reacted to the Texas game. Coaching isn't always as easy as it seems.

I would do it every single time zero hesitation.

If you can't rebound a missed FT, or prevent a half court pass, you deserve to lose.

Yeah that was a wild sequence. Should have played it out.

Yep, should have tried to under 5 though.

Right, there are mistakes that cost them the game after the foul.

Coaching can't beat bad luck with a combination of mistakes. It was the right call.

This.

Plus you have someone on your team with 40+ points. I would give him the ball to end the game.

It depends on your roster as to whether or not you would actually do it as a coach.

It turns the end of the game into a free throw shooting contest. What if your team shoots <70% from the line and your opponent shoots 80% as a team?

In that case the smart call is to make them try and tie the game with a 3.

We were always taught that you should make free throws as easily as you make layups. I personally can hit about 80% of my free throws.

However, I doubt I ever hit 3s above a 40% clip.

So if I am coaching a team that shoots free throws better than my team I would rather force them to try and make the harder shot (the 3), than to put the other team on the line knowing their players hit more free throws than my guy.

So it just depends. And look what happened to Arkansas against Indiana. Archie fouled us up 3 late. We hit our free throws, foul them, they hit their free throws, and then he does not foul again.

So the strategy can evolve even within a single game. It's all based on percentages and odds, if you ask me.

Coaches have a lot to keep track of during a game.
