Vandy's pitching made the ouch list this week

quote:

– Vanderbilt Pitching What Happened: Gave up 28 runs in three games. Why It Hurts: This is a mound corps everyone is expecting to be one of the best in the country. As Aaron Fitt wrote in his preseason write-up of the Commodores pitching, “Vanderbilt is absurdly deep on the mound.” So it was really weird to see the Anchor Down boys give up 28 runs and 32 hits while walking 17 and plunking four this weekend. Don’t freak out Dores fans, we realize they played high-quality teams in Virginia, Fullerton and TCU and still won two out of three. It was just weird to see them give up football scores all weekend. I’m confident these things won’t last long.

Pepperdine had a good weekend last night and the folks at D1Baseball had a short summary on them:

quote:

The race for the West Coast Conference championship is wide open with Saint Mary’s, Pepperdine and others leading the charge. The Waves began the season in Arizona and didn’t disappoint.

Pepperdine smoked CSU Bakersfield 11-0 in the season opener before beating California 7-5 and beating Wichita State 13-8. The Waves, in their second game of the day Sunday afternoon, dropped their finale to Stanford, but the weekend was a success after scoring 32 runs in four games. Charlie Welch led the charge offensively with a .400 average over the weekend, while Quincy McAfee and Brandt Belk had averages of .353 and .333, respectively. Wyatt Young, who hit .294, also had a nice weekend with four RBIs.

On the mound, Cooper Chandler struck out two and allowed a run on four hits in 5.1 innings, while Jonathan Pendergast struck out five and allowed just three hits in six shutout innings. Michael Mahony also had a nice weekend with a pair of saves in two innings pitched.
