This is definitely a huge hire for him, but he would get a pass for these first 2 seasons from me. He clearly didn't want to turn over the apple cart with Stoops in year 1 after Bob handed him the program, and he pretty decisively made the change this year. It sucks to waste 2 years with those 2 QBs, but the situation was just difficult for a young new coach under the shadow of a legend.

There was nothing to waste.
OU’s problem isn’t coaching, it’s that the SEC is signing all the really good defensive talent in Texas that would have gone to OU ten years ago. They are doing the best they can do with the talent they have.
Unless they hire a guy who can push their recruiting to be completely national and they can start to pull in five stars from other regions they have a solid glass ceiling hanging over their program thanks to A&M exposing the state of Texas to the SEC.
Hence the intense SEC envy we see here, they know it deep down.
