All other playoffs I know about have a defined way on the field for a team to get into before the season starts. We still dont have that in college football.

All other playoffs in Div 1 do not have an absolute requirement to get into them. Basketball, baseball, and softball all have many ways of getting into them that do not involve winning your conference.

In fact, from 1985 to 2017, the majority of teams to win the national championship in basketball LOST their conference tournaments. (14 won, 15 lost - of the 15, only 6 made the final game for their conference). Villanova did bring that back up to a 50/50 split, but it should be noted that they did not win the regular season in their conference - Xavier did.

Huh? All those sports have an exact defined way to get in. There are also wild card spots

Like I said, I still do not know of another sport where the playoff does not have a defined way to get in settled on the field.
